I enjoy incorporating my model trains with local landmarks and a certain era in time. My layout pictured here has several local train landmarks represented. We create the hand painted backdrops for the layouts that I build. I have also customized the decking on this layout to coordinate with the backdrop which adds a quality of realism to the layout.
Here's a view of the farm scene area of this L-shaped layout. The elevator is painted into the backdrop but the silo is a 3 dimensional structure that I made from a Pringles can, using silver metallic paint, then attached the silo to the backdrop to create the realistic illusion that both are standing structures, but of course the elevator s just a painted image on the backdrop. This is a bit of "trompe l'oeil" (tricking the eye) that I enjoy adding to the layouts that I build.
Here is another view of the same farm scene area.
